Iconos

Aslı Özok argues that contemporary women involved in art who happen to be an icon in their environment are intrinsically the face of time. In her paintings, the artist depicts female images that resemble Virgin Mary, whilst using specific brands from a globalised world in the background. In a way, this implies that religion, the old definitive power, is being replaced by “fashion” that has been presented by the system in a different way.

Rather than focus on partial problems, the artist approaches the state created by the system in a holistic way. This conveys the artist’s tricks on the surface to a universal level. Therefore the state acquired on the surface significantly shortens the emotional distance the audience establishes with the work of art.
